FC Boston Scorpion GU14s Win 2016 National Title

US Club Soccer Super Group National Champs

U14 ECNL girls take US Club Soccer SuperGroup National Championship

Mo Keita's U14 ECNL girls took home the Championship trophy from Denver on Monday, outscoring STA (NJ) 4-3.

After wining the first three qualifying games 5-2, 2-0 and 3-0 in hot/humid weather in the 6,000 foot Colorado elevation the Championship game kicked off in the low 70s, perfect conditions on a quality grass field.

The FC Boston side scored first three minutes into the game when Chloe Layne flicked a header in off a perfect Tess-Webb Johnson cross.  STA responded with two relatively quick goals, changing the momentum. The first half ended with FC Boston trailing 1-2.

A very determined FC Boston side tok the field in the second half and scored three goals in the first 9 minutes.  Left back Tess Webb Johnson fired in a loose ball from just outside the 18, quickly followed by a Sam Caldarelli header from an Rebecca Rocker cross and then a Kelsey Moody blast from about 25 yards.  4-2.

FC Boston possessed the ball and wore out the clock with most of the play in the STA end. Defenders Alivia Kelley, Dottie Tilden, Abby Clickstein, Rebecca Rocker and Tess Webb-Johnson were a second half wall.

The midfield group of Anna Edson, Amanda Caldarelli, Kelsey Moody, Ashleigh Starks, Lexi Vaillancourt and Marina Karalis passed, possessed and defended well. After the back and forth first half FC Boston midfielders beat STA to almost every loose ball.

Attackers Chloe Layne, Olivia Stowell, Ally Giovino, Sam Caldarelli and Emily Horgen pressured beleaguered STA defenders relentlessly

Late in the game, just after Tess Webb-Johnson chipped the STA GK and saw the ball rebound straight back to the STA GK a quick outlet resulted in a ball played into the FC Boston box by STA who had pushed all but two players forward.  STA was awarded a last minute PK during a battle for the ball inside the box by the competitive FC Boston defenders. STA converted that opportunity but FC Boston had little trouble closing out the game after that.

GKs Carolyn Kelly and Nic Scola split the game and as always, were excellent.

Every FC Boston player played meaningful minutes and contributed, a great credit to coach Keita who believed in each of them.

Congratulations to the U14 ECNL girls and Coach Mo Keita!  This US Club Soccer Super Group National Championship capped off a very good year for the team who won the Massachusetts State Cup defeating the vaunted NEFC Elite girls 2-1 in OT off a cracking Amanda Caldarelli goal and had tournaments wins at Stars Cup, Scorpion Bowl and were a finalist at Spirit Cup.  Great job by the group!

One other thing... congratulations and a giant thank you to the group of parents of the players on this team. This exemplary group represented FC Boston in the most ideal fashion.
