FC Boston is a 501(C)(3) non-profit corporation, and our club’s stated mission is to empower and develop young players to reach their ultimate potential on and off the field through premium coaching and the highest quality competition. Our actual mission goes far deeper than just technical and tactical development. Using soccer as a vehicle, we aspire to help our players enrich their life skills by building self esteem, developing good health habits, managing the demands of a major extracurricular time commitment and working collaboratively in performance oriented teams. This helps our players learn how to be leaders, how to interact effectively with adults, how to get the most out of one another and how to channel their competitive instincts productively.

FC Boston conducts open tryouts each year for all of our teams.
The mutual commitment between a player and the Club lasts for one year. At the conclusion of the season, open tryouts are held in June. Selection to a team one year does not guarantee that player a place on the team the following year. Tryouts are held every year to allow teams to replace players who have dropped off or have moved on. Tryouts also allow hardworking and ambitious players, not currently with the Club, who have improved their playing ability, to join stronger or more competitive teams in FC Boston. Detailed tryout schedules for each region are posted in first week of May. Click on the region tab for more details and contact information for Bolts Regional Contacts in your area.
BIRTH YEAR Age Groups
US Soccer has mandated a change to how American soccer will be organized, changing age groups from an August-July format to January-December. The current cutoff date in American youth soccer is Aug. 1. Academy teams have used birth year since 2007, but we will now use BIRTH YEAR age groups for every team in the club. Birth year means a child will play in the age group of the year of their birth. For example, if your child was born between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 2002, he will play in the 2002 Birth Year age group. If your child was born between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 2006, he would be placed in the 2006 Birth Year age group.
The primary benefit to playing in Birth Year is purely developmental. Birth Year will allow our strongest players to train and play against older players which is one of the best ways to speed up player development. Many of the greatest players in the world played up against older players for the majority of their youth careers. At the club level, it will allow for better development because individual players will be more challenged which in turn raises competitive standards.
We anticipate some anxiety as the tryout process unfolds with the short-term social impact changes could cause, but, we believe developmentally players with benefit and every player will find an appropriate place.
If you have any questions about BOYS teams and the birth year mandate, please don't hesitate to ask any of our Regional Directors & Club Staff.
